The Department of Applied Physics provides a wide selection of undergraduate courses in basic physics both for the physics students in the degree programme of Engineering Physics and Mathematics as well as for students in other engineering degree programmes. The physics laboratory experiments are an essential part of undergraduate studies besides the lecture courses.
The Department of Applied Physics is to a great extent responsible for the bachelor’s degree’s major subject in Engineering Physics. Besides the generic courses in classical and quantum mechanics, in electric and magnetic fields and in thermodynamics, the students can choose among more specific courses in materials physics, statistical physics, nuclear and elementary particle physics and in soft condensed matter physics according to their preferences. The department’s research groups provide topics and supervision for bachelor’s theses on various topical fields of applied physics.
In the master’s studies provided by the Department of Applied Physics, the students can further strengthen their knowledge in physical sciences within the major subject of Engineering Physics. The studies include courses in quantum mechanics, statistical physics, materials and nanophysics, biophysics, and in advanced energy technologies including fission, fusion or renewable energy sources. The courses deal with experimental, theoretical, and computational topics. The students can also choose one of following major subjects: Energy sciences, Nanotechnology or Optics which are joint majors with other departments of TKK. Students’ special assignments are an essential part of the master’s studies and department’s research groups provide topics and supervision for special assignments and for master's theses.
The Department of Applied Physics is highly committed to doctoral researcher training of which the research groups bear the main responsibility. The postgraduate students have a large flexibility and responsibility in the postgraduate studies. The Graduate Schools provide also training in terms of courses, Summer Schools and Workshops.
