National Graduate School in Materials Physics
The National Graduate School in Materials Physics (NGSMP) is a part of the graduate school (doctoral) system launched in Finland in 1995. The aim of the system is to coordinate and organize research training in the Finnish universities.
At present, the National Graduate School in Materials Physics has about 120 graduate students. Roughly 40 graduate students in the NGSMP obtain their funding through the Graduate School. In addition to the direct funding of the individual research studies, the Graduate School organizes graduate courses and workshops, invites international lecturers and supports financially conference participation of the graduate school students.
NGSMP is funded by the Ministry of Education and the Academy of Finland.
NGSMP is coordinated by the director of the school Prof. Risto Nieminen and coordinator Kirsi Toivola from the Helsinki University of Technology with local contact persons in the participating universities and projects.
Call for National Graduate School in Materials Physics
The National Graduate School in Materials Physics (NGSMP) has operated since 1994. It offers opportunities in full-time postgraduate studies in condensed matter and materials physics, both experimental, theoretical and computational. The research activities and the graduate studies focus on new materials, their processing, characterisation, theoretical description and numerical modelling. The purpose of the Graduate School is to give first-rate training for persons interested in research and development careers both in industry and academia. For successful candidates, funding is normally secured for a four-year period to complete a Ph.D. Around 22 research groups at following universities and research institutes participate in the Graduate School activities: Helsinki University of Technology Tampere University of Technology University of Helsinki Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) Helsinki Institute of Physics (HIP) University of Turku University of Jyväskylä Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) University of Oulu Lappeenranta University of Technology
The core research areas of NGSMP include: • Atomic-scale structural and electronic properties of materials • New materials for micro- and optoelectronics and microelectromechanics • Physical nanosciences • Electron spectroscopy with synchrotron radiation and other characterisation techniques • Computational physics and materials science • Theoretical condensed matter physics • Surface physics and its applications • Low temperature physics and its applications • Physics of mesoscopic systems and quantum engineering • Biological and soft matter physics
There are altogether more than 130 graduate students in the program, of which 37 are financed through the Graduate School directly. Applications are now invited for positions becoming available on 1.1. 2010. Successful applicants should hold the degree of M.Sc. or equivalent in physical sciences or a related area.
The applications should include (1) Curriculum vitae with relevant degree information, (2) indication of the primary fields of interest, (3) 1-2 letters of recommendation, and (4) indication of the university and laboratory where the candidate would prefer to conduct the main part of her/his studies.
The applications should be sent before October 16, 2009 to the coordinator of the Graduate School, Ms. Kirsi Toivola, Department of Applied Physics, Helsinki University of Technology, P.O.B. 1100, 02015 HUT, Finland (email: kis@fyslab.hut.fi). Further information is also available from the Director of the School, Prof. Risto Nieminen in the same address. Applicants should also consult www.tfy.tkk.fi/gradschool/ for detailed information of the participating research groups, including contact persons.
