The research activities of the fusion technology and plasma physics group concentrate on physics problems relevant to large tokamaks and stellarators. All work related to magnetic fusion at TKK is included in the FUSION Technology Programme of Tekes and is carried out in close collaboration with VTT under the European Fusion Development Agreement (EFDA). Because of the lack of a Finnish fusion experiment, international collaborations with experimental laboratories around Europe are an essential part of our research effort that is largely numerical and theoretical, contributing in part to the work of the EFDA Integrated Tokamak Modelling Task Force (ITM-TF). The research tasks can be divided into several categories with some overlap: work related to radiofrequency heating and current drive in tokamak plasmas, MHD/ELM studies, orbit-following Monte Carlo simulations, work on laser and microwave plasma diagnostics, activities at JET, activities at IPP-Garching, and gyrotron development at CRPP-Lausanne. The research projects have been funded by the Academy of Finland, Association Euratom-Tekes, Helsinki University of Technology, Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT), and by various grants.
